Smith Senior Living Trustee since 2005
“Just glancing at the myriad of life enrichment activities in Smith Village communities is a testament to how much the staff cares about the whole person’ and about our residents’ happiness,” states Steven Murphy, who served as the vice president for student life at Chicago’s Saint Xavier University for almost 25 years.
“Our residents participate in planning the programs and enjoy the activities,” he explains. “They’re curious. They like to challenge their cognitive skills with new learning opportunities. It is impressive to realize that so many of our residents, including women, completed college in the 1930s and even ’20s.”
The synergy between Saint Xavier and Smith retirement communities strengthens how they serve across the generations, according to Dr. Murphy, who notes that SXU’s Renaissance Academy for older adults and Smith’s internships for college students continue to flourish.
Recently embarked on his own phased retirement plan, Murphy encourages friends and neighbors to take a closer look at CCRC’s, now Life Plan Communities while they’re healthy so they can appreciate the many benefits the Smith Village lifestyle has to offer.
Murphy earned a doctorate in education from Northern Illinois University as well as master’s degrees from Loyola University of Chicago and Andover Newton Theological School. His undergraduate degree is from the Boston College School of Management.
